One of the most powerful lessons I teach in my coaching is this: Your thoughts shape your reality. The way you think about yourself, your circumstances, and your future directly influences how you feel, what actions you take, and ultimately, the results you experience. If you’ve ever felt like you’re running in circles, trying to make progress but never quite getting there, it’s time to look at what’s happening in your mind.


How Your Thoughts Shape Your Life


Most people believe their circumstances determine their happiness and success. But in reality, it’s not what happens to you that matters most it’s how you think about what happens.


For example, imagine two people applying for the same job. Both are equally qualified, but one is thinking, “I’m excited for this opportunity and know I can bring value,” while the other is thinking, “I’ll probably fail, and they won’t pick me.” These thoughts create completely different emotional experiences.


  • The first person feels motivated and confident, leading them to prepare well, speak with enthusiasm, and make a great impression.


  • The second person feels nervous and defeated, leading them to hesitate, doubt themselves, and struggle to communicate their value.


Even though their circumstances are identical, their results will likely be very different because of their thoughts.


The Power of Thought Work: How to Shift Your Mindset


The good news? You can choose better thoughts. Your mind is powerful, and once you become aware of your thinking patterns, you can shift them to create better outcomes. Here’s how:


  1. Become Aware of Your Thoughts - Start paying attention to what you’re thinking throughout the day. Are your thoughts empowering or limiting?


  2. Question Them - Ask yourself, “Is this thought true? Is it helpful? Is it moving me forward?”


  3. Choose a Better Thought - Instead of thinking, “ill never figure this out,” shift to, “I may not know everything yet, but I’m capable of learning.”


A Real-Life Example: Overcoming Self-Doubt


Let’s take Emma, for example. She’s a talented writer who dreams of publishing a book but keeps telling herself, “I’m not a real writer. No one will want to read my work.” Because of this thought, she feels discouraged and afraid to take action. She avoids writing consistently and never submits her work for publishing.


Through coaching, Emma learns to challenge this belief. Instead of thinking, “I’m not a real writer,” she shifts to, “Every writer starts somewhere. I can improve and share my work.” This new thought makes her feel motivated and capable, leading her to write regularly, share her work, and eventually publish her first piece.


Her circumstances didn’t change - only her thoughts did. And that made all the difference.


Practical Steps to Shift Your Mindset Today


  • Notice Your Default Thoughts - What’s the first thing you think when faced with a challenge? Is it helping or hurting you?


  • Ask, “Is This Thought Serving Me?” If it’s not, replace it with one that moves you forward.


  • Act from Your New Thought - Your thoughts drive your actions. When you shift your thinking, you’ll naturally start making better choices.
